Are our kids too fat?

According to several reports American children are growing obese at alarming rates.
This fact, being blamed in part on school lunches; which are often high in fat, sugar,
salt and too many calories, can no longer be ignored.

Many high school teenagers are too heavy to enlist in the military. The Armed Services of today have rather rigid standards that have to be met by all members of the military.

Gone are the days of the big "potbelly" noncoms, the real leaders of our fighting forces. If you gain too much weight, you have to lose it or face possible discipline actions. Who wants to follow a non-commissioned or petty officer who can not keep up
with their subordinates?

School systems have been attempting to provide more nutritious lunches, but there are still the "fast food" lines serving empty calories.

Of course not all the blame can be laid at the feet of our schools. Lack of proper diet, training, and exercise at home must share the blame.

Will there come a day when every enlistee must undergo a strict diet and exercise regimen prior to actual enlistment? We can only hope not.

18+veterans+commit+suicide+each+day

Very disturbing news, and many of these suicide attempts are by veterans receiving some care
from the VA. It seems the VA should do more thorough screening of all veterans.

Contact your elected officials in home state

The Senate and House are still in recess. They will be in their home states and districts
until April 11.

There is still time to ask for a face to face with them or their staff. Get them at home.
Ask both your Senators to become cosponsors of bill S.2743 The Cold War Service Medal
Act 2009. Ask them to have in placed into the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA)2011.

Ask your Representative to be a cosponsor to H.R.4051 The Cold War Medal Act 2009(this is
identical) to the bill in the Senate. And of course ask to have it included in the NDAA 2011.

The Cold War ended in 1991, how much longer should these veterans be forced to wait for
this recognition? As the days go by, so do the veterans. We grow fewer every day, maybe
that is what Congress is waiting for. The end of the Cold War Veteran. After that no
more "old guys" bending their ears.

Let's do it now, this year should be the year to remember these heroes.

Cold War Veterans will gather in Washington, DC

Cold War Veterans from across the country will gather in Washington, DC for their annual meeting on April 28th from 2:00PM till 4:00PM.

The meeting will take place in the Dirksen Senate Building Room SD-G11. We hope to have several members of Congress attend and join Cold War Veterans from across the country.

We will be discussing several of our goals:
1. To have Congress authorize and direct Department of Defense to issue a Cold War Service Medal to all those veterans who served in the military from Sept. 1945
to Dec. 1991.
In this regard there are currently two bills in various committees in Congress.
We need everyone's assistance. Please Contact both of your Senators ask them to become
a cosponsor to bill S.2743 The Cold War Service Medal Act 2009. Also contact your
Congressman/Congresswoman urge them to become a cosponsor to an identical bill in the House H.R. 4051 The Cold War Service Medal Act 2009. In both cases ask to have the
medal legislation included in the National Defense Authorization Act 2011.

2. To have Congress create a day to recognize and remember veterans of the Cold War. The
House of Representatives recently passed H.RES.900 to recognize these veterans, but
failed to designate a specific day for this honor.

3. The creation of a monument in Washington, DC to honor these forgotten and unknown veterans of the Cold War.

Also at this meeting the American Cold War Veterans will be making a donation to the
Health and Welfare fund of the USS Liberty Association.

The USS Liberty is the US Navy ship that was attacked by Israeli forces on June 8, 1967.
This attack killed 34 Americans and injured another 174.

We are reaching out to our fellow veterans to assist them with this fund to help those
who were injured. These brave men are now aging rapidly and many need additional help with their medical expenses.

This meeting is open to anyone that might be interested in the Cold War or the USS Liberty.

Following the general meeting, members will travel to Arlington National Cemetery to
hold their annual Day of Remembrance with a memorial service at 5:00PM to honor
the Forgotten Heroes of the Cold War.
