Free Meals or Discount Meals for Military and Veterans

Once again this year many restaurants are giving away free meals, or discounts on menu items to
active duty military and veterans. There is a very good list on Facebook, that is constantly updated.
you can find the list here Veterans Day Free Meals

I did notice that a few require valid ID cards, you may want to check in advance to see if they will
accept a DD-214 for those of us who are not in the VA system and do not have an ID. They might
accept Drivers License or ID Card with the Veterans designation. Just check in advance

A very large thank you to the participating restaurants that are providing this wonderful tribute
and honor to our troops.

Once again the issue of a government ID card, as H.R. 2985 which would make an ID Card
available to all veterans is an issue that must be pursued.  Contact you Representative to demand
the bill be brought to the floor for a full vote, and vote for passage.

Veterans' Day 11/11/11

Veterans' Day 11/11/11 is a special day, a historic one, as we remember the 11th hour of
the 11th day of the 11th month, and everyday that all those who wore or are wearing the
uniform of the U.S. Military.

The meaning of Veterans' Day to me as I look back at the history of our country, is one of pride,
remembrance, honor, sorrow and joy all mixed together.

Proud of every veteran of every generation. It does not matter where or when you served, you are
a hero, you did your best to keep America the land of the Free. Not just America, but freedom for
so many millions of people around the world.

Remembering all who gave their lives, were wounded or were POW/MIA. You are not forgotten
and our nation is a better place because you where there when it counted.

It is an honor to be counted among the 22.6 million living veterans. It is a small brotherhood, but
one that will always live in our hearts, minds and memories. Often through hard times and in
far away places, we stood tall and did our duty.

Sorrow to think about the brave men and women who did not return to their loved ones and family.
To look at the lines of headstones in our national cemeteries, lined up at "dress right dress" is
a truly humbling experience. To visit the various memorials across this great land and to think
about the reason for their being.

Joy to know that the generation now serving in our military will carry on the tradition of those
who went before them; and sad to know that it is necessary, that more lives will be lost, more
maimed and injured. Not just the physical wounds, but also the mental anguish and pain that
will be with them for the rest of their lives.

A simple Thank You is not enough, but sometimes it is all a veteran will ever receive; and
often all a veteran wants. To be remembered for the sacrifices and hardships we faced.

How can we ever thank our veterans enough? So if you see a veteran shake his/her hand
and say Thank You From The Bottom Of My Heart.

Maine Veterans Day, Day Off

The state of Maine is considering a bill that would give veterans a paid day off for Veterans Day,
Nov. 11th.

Bill HP0146, LD 169 would mandate that any employer with more than 50 employees allow a
veteran to have a day off with pay for Veterans Day.

Although Veterans Day is considered a holiday, the majority of employers do not close for the day
and if an employee does take the day off, it is without pay.

Everyone living in Maine please contact your state Senators and Representatives ask them to
cosponsor and vote for passage of HP0146, LD169. Our veterans deserve this day off with pay.

Iowa Congressman Bruce Braley-Give Veterans the Day OFF on Veterans Day

Congressman Braley appears to be a Veteran Friendly member of Congress, and a member of the
House Veterans Affairs Committee. This is someone we should all target as a possible ally in the quest
for our Cold War Service Medal.

I ask that everyone contact him and ask for his support. Possibly even to introduce legislation to
authorize the Cold War Service Medal.

Braley proposes making Veterans Day a holiday for veterans

by Pat Curtis on January 20, 2011

Iowa Congressman Bruce Braley was confirmed Wednesday as a new member of the Veterans Affairs Committee in the 112th Congress. The Democrat from Waterloo quickly proposed legislation to make Veterans Day a holiday for all vets.

Braley says the bill is modeled after a law that already exists in Iowa. “It makes sure brave men and women who have served our nation are able to take Veterans Day off,” Braley said. Veterans Day is currently designated as a federal holiday, but private employers can choose to ignore it. Braley’s proposal would require private employers to give any employee who is a veteran a day off on Veterans Day.

“I’ll be working with members on both sides of the aisle to get cosponsors for my bill and hopefully move it through the Veterans Committee as soon as possible,” Braley said. The bill includes exceptions for small businesses, cases where public health or safety are concerned, or where the holiday would significantly disrupt operations.

Braley says the employer would decide if the day off should be a paid or unpaid holiday.

Elkhart, Indiana to play Taps on 5 mile stretch

Elkhart, Indiana will honor veterans on Veterans Day with what will be a heart touching and somber
reminder.

Starting at 9 a.m. 92 musicians spaced about 300 feet apart will play Taps, one at a time. As one bugler finishes, the next will start with the final note of the proceeding bugler. The musicians will be along a road between two cemeteries that are approximately 5 miles apart.

Terry Valentine helped launch the Echo Taps From the Heart last year. He told the Elkhart Truth he wants this years event to serve as a poignant tribute to those who served.

Starting at Pine Street Cemetery the event will end about two hours later at Rice Cemetery. There a ceremony will take place that will include all 92 musicians playing Taps at the same time.

Such a tribute is sure to be an event to remember, and will bring tears to many eyes as they hear the
echo rolling along the path.

Veterans Day Parade-San Diego, CA

Here is a great opportunity for all Cold War Veterans in California to be honored. San Diego, CA
is calling this years Veterans Day Parade..Welcome Home Cold War Veterans

The theme for this years parade is Welcome Home Cold War Warriors. I need to try to identify as many as I can that served during the Cold War (not Counting Veterans of the Korean War or the Vietnam War).
I am looking for Veterans that served: In Germany during the Cold War period;
In Korea after the Korean War, especially those stationed along the DMZ;
That were a part of the North Atlantic Barrier, flying in the Super Connies (WV’s), serving on the DER’s or stationed at Argentia, Newfoundland, and those who served in the North Pacific Barrier;

Anyone serving in the SOSUS System on either coast;
Members of the crew of the USS Pueblo, USS Stark, USS Liberty, Marine Barracks Beirut, and Marine guards stationed in hostile countries embassies.

If I think of more will let you know.

Those that we can identify will be Honorary Grand Marshals in the Veterans Day Parade.

Thanks!

Joe Brunner

(619) 466-2132

I also understand that there will be displays of Cold War materials and possibly some military equipment used during the long hard struggle against Communism.

So if you live in California, in our around San Diego please plan to attend this important event.

Please call Joe Brunner for more information. We hope to have a very large turnout. This is a big moment for all Cold War Veterans, little by little it seems the word is getting out that we did contribute and our service did count. It is time to stand tall and let everyone know who you are.

I suggest that everyone contact their local city officials and ask them to have this years Veterans Day Parade as a symbol to dedicate the parade to Cold War Veterans.

A nicely written article. Read it and think about it, then thank a vet, not just on veterans day, but everyday. Thank you to those serving now.
