Cannot make the Russians angry by issuing a Cold War Victory Medal, could that be the reason
for this year?
US Congress wants to be ‘best friends’ with Russia
25 June, 2009, 05:50
With just two weeks to go before President Obama's visit to Moscow, nuclear disarmament is the hot topic in the US Congress, as Russia and America have only six months left to reach a compromise on a new weapons treaty.
With the clock ticking, both Republicans and Democrats are stretching out their hands in friendship. It seems that members of both parties want to make amends with Russia before the deadline passes.
“I think we can become allies,” said Democratic Rep. Diane E. Watson.
“Let’s reach out to each other, let’s forget the last ten years, and hopefully we can build a better world by being best friends,” agreed Republican Rep. Dana Rohrabacher.
But discussion about nuclear weapons inevitably raises other issues. Any talk of Russian and American nuclear disarmament almost always leads to questions about what to do with America’s proposed defense shield in Eastern Europe.
So perhaps before the US and Russia become “best friends”, they should first determine what to do with those ABMs.
So what gives in this nuclear dilemma?
“It’s essential that we use the nuclear shield as a bargaining position,” is how Rep. Diane E. Watson sees it.
But this is not some kind of bazaar, and even US officials seem to understand that Russia will not be simply bought out on the proposed defense shield in Eastern Europe.
“For us to try to go on and build something on our own – I could understand why Russia would look at that as something that could be threatening,” admits Rep. Dana Rohrabacher.
So what is the next step?
“Let’s scrap the current idea and get together and have an agreement to reduce the number of nuclear weapons and then build – the US and Russia together – a missile defense system that serves the cause of peace,” Rep. Dana Rohrabacher proposes.
Serving the cause of peace by reducing the world’s nuclear stockpiles? Now that’s the basis for a friendship that will truly last.
Jerry, sorry, but cannot let this one go without comment. No one ever wanted a nuclear war, for to do would be insane. What galls my butt are these double dealing lying politicians who will say & do anything to hold power and benefits. I was really floored on Monday this week when McCain was on CSpan and answered a phone question about Ronald Reagan, McCain responded to the caller by stating (it's on the CSpan Record)that " Reagan won the cold war without firing a shot". So help me, he said it. Given this kind of attitude demonstrated by those we seek help from, leaves me to believe there will be no CWVM/CWSM in my time. I'm done sucking up to these slease. They do not serve the Veteran, they are self serving, ego centric and self indulgent. They get elected to office to graze at the public payroll and benefit trough. The long term career politians should be voted out of office Wonder if America will ever wake up and smell the coffee brewing? As far as the GDH Russians, screw em.
ReplyDeleteFurther comment; the various cold war veterans associations over the years have maintained a strategy of "requesting help" in getting a Cold War Medal issued. What congress really listens to are direct challenges to their performance ratings and how they deliver on constituents services, in other words the respectfull, intelleigent direct approach; eg,1) "Mr. Congressman, there are some 26 million American Veterans who served our and your country from 1945 to 1991 who neither have received a Cold War Medal or recognition for their honorable service and; 2) in far too many cases do not qualify for VA assistance under current VA Guidelines. They have been told by DoD and others, providing a Cold War Medal and VA Assistance is too expensive. What do you think these Veterans think of congress, when they are denied a medal honoring their service and a little help with their health needs, but rather see congress taking expensive trips/junckets,spending "their" tax payer monies on " bridges to nowhere" and projects of little value, spending TARP monies on stupid non production pet projects. Congress just pasted a Cap and Trade Bill that put people in the poor house come this winter; nothing but another tax on people who are already taxed to the hilt. In closing, how is it that we can vote you back into office for another term, given you poor and indifferent actions against the Cold Warrior who protected your parents, you and siblings, set the basis of protection for a robust economy for 50 years, which allowed you and country to prosper, go to college, have a good paying job and above all the pursuit of happiness. Inclosing you need to get up to speed on the Cold War, learn what it meant to you as an individual, then honor those men and women who gallantly served you. HONOR THEM with the Cold War Medal and health services.
